While home on furlough in November 1951, he married Harriett (Newton) Petty before being deployed to Korea. He spent 13 months on the front lines during the Korean War. After returning from Korea in 1953, Leon and Harriett moved to Florida for two years. While in Florida, Leon joined the Carpenter’s Union.

Wilhelm Construction Company, where he worked until 1978. He then worked for H.C. Beck Construction Company until 1983 and J.C. Ripberger Construction Company in 1984, retiring in March 1992. He was superintendent on many projects including schools, libraries, Purdue Chemistry Buildings, dormitories, hospitals, Carmel Town Hall, and other commercial buildings.
After retirement, he and Harriett spent winters in Texas. In summer they camped with their grandchildren and traveled in their fifth wheel. In 2015, the Petty’s sold their home in the country and moved to a condo in Lebanon.
Leon will be remembered as an easy going, quiet man with a terrific sense of humor. He truly loved his children and grandchildren. He encouraged David, Mark, and Nancy in all of their endeavors.
