Jack Steelsmith

Mr. Jack Steelsmith, 94, of Lebanon, Indiana, passed away peacefully Friday, June 27, 2025, at Homewood Health Campus. Born in Kirklin, Indiana, on September 18, 1930, Jack was a son of the late Percy Glen Steelsmith and Mary Ruth (Hoffman) Red.


On March 21, 1954, he was united in marriage to Patricia Joan (Alford) Steelsmith, at the home of the bride’s family in Frankfort, Indiana. They celebrated 70 loving years together before she passed away on April 1, 2024.


Jack was a 1948 graduate of Lebanon High School. Following school, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950–1954. Upon his return from service, Jack worked as a switchman, for Indiana Bell and then AT&T, retiring in 1988 after 33 years.


Active in the Lebanon community, he held memberships with the Elks Lodge #635, American Legion Post 113, VFW Post 910, Jaycees, and Telephone Pioneers. He loved spending time with his family and telling stories from the “good old days” with his buddies. Jack worked on many projects including restoring a 1930 Model A Roadster and building a pontoon boat the family enjoyed on Morse Reservoir.


Jack and Joan traveled the United States visiting all of the states except Alaska. They wintered in Lake Placid, Florida and enjoyed time with friends. He lived a life marked by service, dedication and quiet strength.


Survivors include his children, Tonya Thayer of Lebanon, and Greg (Teresa) Steelsmith of Lebanon; 5 grandchildren, Melissa Stambaugh of Lebanon, Heather (Brian) Montgomery of Lebanon, Andrew (Heidi) Thayer of Zionsville, Alex (Tara) Steelsmith of Attica, Michigan, and Leslie (Nathan) Cannon of Waterford Township, Michigan; seven great grandchildren, Kelsey (Paul) Carr, Evan (Savannah) Stambaugh, Brayden Myers, Brenden Montgomery, Harrison and Hadley Thayer, and Otto Steelsmith; two great-great grandchildren, Jackson and Presley Joan Carr; and a sister Madalyn Peabody, and two sisters-in-law Lois Steelsmith and Virginia Young.


In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Jack was preceded in death by son-in-law, Sam Thayer; granddaughter, Felicia Steelsmith; grandson-in-law, Andy Myers; brother, Robert Steelsmith; and sister JoAn Reynolds.


Funeral Services with military rites are planned for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2025, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.


Memorials may be directed in Jack’s memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
