Mary Marrs, of Lebanon, age 93, passed away in the early morning of May 4, 2026 while receiving comfort care at Community North Hospital.
Mary was born in Pana, Illinois and grew up on the family farm, the daughter of Orville and Hyacinth Beyers (Klein).
Mary graduated from Sacred Heart Academy High School Springfield, IL, in 1951. She went on to St. Johns Hospital School of Nursing, took additional classes at Wright Jr. College, then graduated as an RN in 1954.
She attended Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She was a member of the Cresset fellowship, Collegiate Democrats, and Newman Club. She met her husband, Sheldon Marrs, at I.U. and they were married in January 1960.
Sheldon and Mary lived in Washington D. C. for a couple years where Mary worked for the local Health Department, and also as a visiting nurse with the Visiting Nurse Association in Chicago and other hospitals throughout the country. They moved back to Zionsville, Indiana from Washington D.C. in 1965, moving to Lebanon a year later. Mary served as Boone County Public Health Nurse starting in 1968 through the mid-eighties before going to work at the Indiana State Board of Health in Indianapolis until she retired.
Mary was a member of Psi Iota Xi and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She taught babysitting classes for YMCA, taught Emergency care classes to Home-ec clubs, and communicable disease control to emergency medical technicians. She was a Little League Mother, a room mother at Central school and served on the Board of Directors for the Tri-County Mental Health Foundation. She enjoyed maintaining plants and flowers in the garden, crafting, upholstering furniture and pursuing her hobby as a local seamstress.
Mary is survived by her husband Sheldon, sons Steven of Columbus and Michael of Indianapolis.
She was blessed with 18 Nieces and Nephews: Lori, Elizabeth, Carol, Joseph, Ellen, John, Eileen, Stephen, Kevin, Shelly, Anne, Shawn, Martin, Julie, Suzanne and Andy. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Lewis Beyers and Kirk Beyers, sisters Kathleen McGovern, Marjorie Beyers, and Betty in infancy, sisters-in-law Patricia Beyers, Joan Beyers, and Shirley Redman, brothers-in-law Joseph McGovern and Pete Redman, and nephew John Beyers.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm Friday May 8 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Lebanon. Catholic Mass will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Fr. Paul Cochran officiating. A luncheon will follow mass in the Church event hall.
She will be laid to rest at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown, Indiana.
