Iris Jean Hicks

Iris Jean Hicks, 99, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at Plainfield Healthcare Center in Plainfield, Indiana. She was born September 6, 1925, in Lebanon, Indiana; a daughter of the late Loris “Jack" E. and Margary P. (Lewallen) Dale.



On December 15, 1946, she married Lowell Leigh “Jack” Hicks at the First Baptist Church in Lebanon. He preceded her in death on December 25, 1987.



Iris graduated from Lebanon High School in 1943 and went on to earn an associate degree in business from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri two years later. She was a proud owner of the Iris Jean Hicks School of Dance, which she operated from her home for 25 years until 1983. In 1988, she became the secretary at First Baptist Church retiring in 2005.



Iris was active in her church and community. She served on various boards and committees and was both deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, walking, line dancing, and spending time with her family. Iris will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.



Survivors include her son, Richie L. (Sandy) Hicks of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Holly (Josh) Ellis of Indianapolis and Heather (Reece) Peacock of Avon; and great grandson, Wyatt Ellis.



In addition to her parents and husband, Iris was preceded in death by her son Gary Dale Hicks and sister, Marcia Jane Isenhower.



Private family services will be held with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon. Myers Mortuary has been entrusted with her arrangements.
