Shirley Jean (Harlan) Maines

Shirley Jean (Harlan) Maines, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, community servant, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Legato Living on Union Street in Westfield, Indiana. Shirley was known for her servant’s heart, unwavering kindness, and quiet dedication to others. She found her greatest joy in bringing people together and by offering a listening ear. Her ever-present smile brightened the lives of those around her. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and will be remembered by all who knew her.

She was born on February 2, 1944, in Lebanon, Indiana, the daughter of Meredith "Med" and Norma Harlan. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, James "Jim" Maines, on July 5, 1964. Together they shared almost 60 years of marriage before Jim passed in 2022. They raised two children, Suzi (Ernie) Boyett and Tim (Allison) Maines, who survive.

A 1962 graduate of Lebanon High School, Shirley continued her education as an adult by taking classes at IUPUI.

Shirley worked at Mounts Flowers until she and Jim opened Maines Minute Print It in the basement of the former Lawler Building in 1981. As the business grew, they relocated to a larger location on North Meridian Street. They successfully owned and operated the business until selling it in 1996.

Shirley and Jim treasured their many lifelong friendships. The Mom and kids group shared numerous "coffees” and included the husbands for other events like Friday night dinners and memorable vacations which strengthened friendships that endured through the years.

A devoted member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Shirley helped organize the church's contemporary worship service and faithfully managed the coffee and cookie station for many years. She was also a dedicated member of the Lebanon Kiwanis Club and took great pride in maintaining perfect attendance for many years. For 58 years, Shirley was a proud member of Gamma Mu Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi. Her sorority sisters held a special place in her heart, and the friendships she found there were among her greatest blessings.

In addition to her children, Shirley is survived by her grandchildren, Cameron (Ayleen) Boyett, Wyatt Boyett, and Izabella "Bella" Maines; great-grandchildren, Jace, Dawson, and Jocelyn “JJ” Boyett; sister, Sherry (Butch Minnick) Lutz; brother-in-law, Cecil (Sandy) Maines; and Beth Bartlett, who was always considered "another daughter" in the Maines household. She was preceded in death by her brother, Spencer Harlan and sister, Sharon (Bressler) Harlan

A Celebration of Life reception will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church (910 Fordice Road, Lebanon, IN) in Patrick Hall. The funeral service will immediately follow at 6:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Legato Living of Greater Indianapolis, (especially the staff at the house on Union Street in Westfield) Anchor of Hope Hospice, and physical therapist Steven Salinas, who became like family through the compassion, kindness, and exceptional care they provided.
